I come from a long line of strong, kind, untameable women.
THE QUESTION
How do I stay true to myself while I am changing, while the world is changing? |
There is a question I have been living with for a long time — perhaps all my life, though I only recently found words for it.
I came to it not through theory but through lineage. Through two women whose lives taught me that alignment is not a straight line forward. It is a reaching back. A claiming of what survived in the women who came before us.
I have two such women. My mother. And her mother, Rose.

THE LINEAGE
Rose
Rose's life was not easy. It was not fair. It was marked by poverty, by violence, by deprivation that would have been unbearable for most of us to imagine, let alone endure.
And yet.
She did not shrink. She did not shrivel. She refused — with every quiet, courageous act of her life — to become less than she was.
My mother used to say, quietly, with complete certainty:
"My mother was a saint."
Not a martyr. Not a victim. A saint.
A woman whose strength and fierce intelligence were not diminished by what she endured. Because beneath the trauma and the difficulty, Rose had connected to something that belonged to something far older and far deeper than any of it.
The Divine Feminine, breathing through her, whether she named it that or not.
And yet.
She did not shrink. She did not shrivel. She refused — with every quiet, courageous act of her life — to become less than she was.

MY MOTHER
She did not become her wound. She became her response to it.
My mother received that flame and carried it forward in her own way. She took the wounds of her childhood and chose, consciously and continuously, to become a loving presence.
Our home was always open. Women and children in crisis would appear at our door. My mother — a widow with five children and barely enough for herself — gave what she had. A meal. A conversation long into the night. Kind words spoken at exactly the right moment.
What they passed to me was not a set of beliefs.
It was a flame.
It was a flame.
Lotus Space is the place I have built to honour that flame. And to call it forward in others.

WHO I AM
Antipodean. Irish-blooded.
A lover and a warrior.
I am Antipodean, born in a land of sun, eucalypts, and didgeridoo, carrying Irish blood. I come from a long line of strong, kind, untameable women. I am a coach, a writer, an artist — and both a lover and a warrior.
I hold the African philosophy of Ubuntu close: I am because we are. We are relational beings. Our flourishing is inseparable from the women beside us, behind us, and yet to come.
And beneath all of it, a devotional tradition absorbed before I had words for it — the rosary, the Virgin Mary, the quiet fierce faith of women who had nothing else to hold onto and held on anyway.

Transformation is not about becoming someone new. It is about becoming more fully who you already are. This is what I have witnessed in Rose. In my mother. In myself. In the women I have had the privilege to sit with.

His grief-tending — the understanding that what we carry without witness festers and what we carry with witness transforms — is woven through everything I offer. Tending the dark is not the opposite of living fully. It is the condition for it.

His soul-poetry is a working tool, not an ornament. The lines I return to most: "What we can plan is too small for us to live." He is the voice I hear when I am at my own threshold.

The African philosophy that underpins everything: I am because we are. We make each other. Our growth happens in relationship. Every circle, every one-to-one, every piece of writing is in service of this truth.

For more than twenty-five years I have worked as a transformational executive and leadership coach — helping people navigate what I call threshold points, the moments where who they have been no longer enough and who they are becoming is not yet clear.
That work continues through Owen Consulting Services, and it is real and it matters.
Lotus Space is the other world I inhabit.
Here, the container is more inward. More mythic. More rooted in the sacred feminine and in the particular kind of knowing that lives in the body and the imagination as well as the mind.
Here I work with women not on how to navigate the organisation, but on how to hear what their own soul is saying. Here the Lilith Circle is a ten-week reclamation. Here The Threshold becomes a deep companionship at the interior edge of a woman's becoming.
Here the writing goes first, and everything else grows from it.
I am also a contributor to the Girl God anthology Original Resistance: Reclaiming Lilith, Reclaiming Ourselves, a Lilith Circle Ambassador, and a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) with a Master of Organisational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.
